Days of Service Volunteer 

Hobart and William Smith Colleges 

October 2012 – April 2017 (4 years 7 months) 

 

Committed to community engagement and giving back to the greater Geneva Community. 

Participated in the October, January, and April Days of Service from 2012-2017.  

Created sustained relationships between community members. 

Participated in the construction of the Community Lakefront Playground. 

 

Community Barn Sale/Community Sale Volunteer 

Hobart and William Smith Colleges 

April 2014 – May 2016 (2 years 2 months) 

 

Participated as a student organizer and facilitator of the annual Barn Sale in 2014, 2015, and 2016. 

Kept storage containers organized and separated e-waster items during Pod Shifts. 

Drove to various locations on campus to collect items and deliver them to storage containers. 

Provided payment and labor assistance during the sale.  

 

The event is co-sponsored by the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning, Residential Education, Office of Sustainability, and the Division of Student Affairs. 

Provided support for the Colleges’ mission for sustainability through an e-waste collection and diversion of tons of waste away from local landfills.  

Iterated the importance of recycling and reuse.  

In the past 12 years, it is estimated that the effort has kept nearly 40 tons of waste out of landfills and raised approximately $67,000, which has been donated to the United Way, Geneva 2020 and other local agencies. 

 

Big Brother Big Sister 

Hobart and William Smith Colleges  

November 2012 – May 2016 (3 years 7 months) 

 

Created a lasting mentorship and friendship with a Geneva community “little” and family that has lasted seven years. 

Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 5 through young adulthood in communities across the country. 

 

PossePlus Scholar Retreat 

Watkins Glen, NY 

February 2016 – February 2016 (1 month) 

 

Participated in a weekend long dialogue on language and how it can be used to shape identity. 

Engaged in workshops and activities with faculty, staff and students from Hobart and William Smith Colleges.  

Presented perspective on language, identity and solutions to campus rhetoric.  

 

Caribbean Student Association

Charity Date Auction

Volunteer

February 2016 – February 2016  

 

Helped raise $1,600 for the Beverly Animal Shelter in Waterloo, N.Y. to provide financial assistance by volunteering at the annual Charity Date Auction hosted by the Caribbean Student Association (CSA). 

 

The Charity Date Auction included a “Couple’s Challenge” with President Mark D. Gearan and Mary Herlihy Gearan, as well as four other couples, who all faced off for the award of CSA’s “Best Couple.” “...Shaahida Samuel ’19 and Cody Rivera ’16 won the “Couple’s Challenge.””

Alternative Spring Break Trip Volunteer 

Hobart and William Smith Colleges 

January 2013 – April 2013 (4 months) 

 

Alternative Spring Break International Service Learning Trip to Westmoreland, Galloway & Petersfield, Jamaica. 

Participated in associated credit bearing readers college course on Jamaica prior to the service project.  

Dedicated over 25 hours of service, providing Primary schools with lessons on math, reading, writing, history, and technology.  

Participated in construction project, refurbishing the primary school classrooms and bathrooms.  

Participated in cultural exchange trips to the Black River Safari, Caves of the Roaring River, Negril, and Rick’s Café. 

Participated in community activities and traditions.  

Lived with a host family for one week.

4th Annual Mr. Hobart Competition 

Local chapter of Habitat for Humanity

Participated in the Mr. Hobart Competition to help raise money for the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

Blood Alcohol Breath Analysis Testing 

Chemistry Department – Professor David Craig Research Group 

October 2012 – December 2012  

 

Participated in research designed to assess the degree of alcohol exposure to HWS students that are out-and-about late at night on school nights and weekend nights. 

Engaged in conducting anonymous and double-blind late night blood alcohol concentration (BAC) measurements by breath test with a linked survey. Neither researcher nor subject knows the BAC at the time of the measurement. 

Set up data collection stations inside the entrance to residence halls between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.  

Invited and randomly sampled individuals to participate in BAC test as they pass through the residence hall entrance. 

Downloaded results the next day and posted to a website by sample number and allowed subjects to go to the website and to find out what their BAC was anonymously.  

Contributed to a ten-year research project conducted by the Chemistry Department.
